HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union
Nestled in downtown Honolulu, you can see the pride and hard work of three dedicated employees who maintain this landscaped area in front of the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union. Visitors are particularly struck by the peaceful restful nature of this garden set in the middle of urban Honolulu's skyscrapers and cement sidewalks.
East-West Center Friendship Circle
The landscape architect firm of Umemoto Cassandro Design, together with designer Leland Miyano, transformed an old area on the EastWest campus. The Friendship circle includes native basalt stones and the garden uses native plants, Polynesian introduced plants, and surviving trees.
Sherman Courtyard
Faculty and staff members at this University ofHawai'i facility got together to undertake a major relandscaping of this older courtyard using Native Hawaiian plants that represent various ecosystems throughout the state. Many of the plants featured in the courtyard garden can be grown successfully in island home gardens.

Sherman Courtyard of the University of Hawai'i
Forest Restoration Project
This project totals 3.5 acres of privately owned native rainforest on Kauai' s North shore. A half acre was cleared to build a home for owner Patricia Rouen and has been subsequently planted as a xeriscape demonstration garden of natives mixed wHh some tropicals. The rest ofthe land is a native reforestation project including several 100-year-old ohia trees and 50 newly planted koa trees
Chinatown courtyard
The new owners of this Chinatown building at 31 N. Pauahi Street took it upon themselves to clean up, landscape and revitalize a concrete courtyard. In an area dominated by high-rises, traffic and dark shadows, this is a sunny oasis of color and tranquility, reminiscent of the urban courtyards one might find in Spain, Greece or Italy
Niu Valley Middle School
A natural green ambiance surrounds this institutional looking school, softening the effect for everyone. School custodian John Otani has maintained the area on his own since 1994 and it shows in the way the area is respected by students and others.
King Intermediate School
Custodian Josephine Antonio has transformed the grounds of this school in Kaneohe into a showplace of plants for students, teachers and visitors to enjoy. Working far beyond the demands of her job, Antonio has created dozens of areas of greenery and color all over the school campus.
Punchbowl Cemetery
National Memorial Cemetery Director Gene Castagnetti and his staff have consistently maintained this internationally known visitor spot in beautiful condition, adding new landscaping and beautification efforts constantly.
